A perfectly preserved foal from an extinct horse species has been uncovered in Siberia’s Batagaika crater. The discovery, made in 2018 by mammoth tusk hunters, reveals a 46,000-year-old Lena horse foal, complete with intact skin, DNA, and even liquid blood. Scientists are now studying its remains to unlock secrets about ancient ecosystems and horse evolution. The foal was found buried beneath 30 metres of permafrost in the Batagaika crater, a massive depression known as the 'Gateway to the Underworld.' This site formed as rising temperatures caused the Siberian permafrost to thaw and collapse. The foal belonged to the Lena horse species (Equus lenensis), which vanished around 5,000 years ago.

Researchers believe the young animal was only two weeks old when it died, likely trapped in mud and unable to free itself. Starvation or dehydration probably followed. Despite its tragic end, the extreme cold preserved the foal exceptionally well, offering rare biological material for study.

Scientists are examining the foal’s stomach contents to reconstruct the ancient Siberian landscape. The preserved plant matter provides clues about the flora and climate of the time. Meanwhile, genetic analysis of the foal’s DNA could shed light on the evolutionary history of modern horses. Some researchers even speculate about the possibility of de-extinction using the recovered genetic material.

The Batagaika crater itself highlights the broader risks of permafrost thaw. As global temperatures rise, melting permafrost releases vast amounts of carbon dioxide and methane—greenhouse gases that further accelerate climate change. This discovery serves as both a scientific breakthrough and a stark reminder of environmental shifts underway. The Lena horse foal remains one of the best-preserved Ice Age animals ever found.
