Russia honors social workers and oceans in dual June celebrations

Russia has long recognised the importance of social welfare and environmental awareness. Two key observances, Social Worker’s Day and World Ocean Day, highlight the country’s commitment to both its people and the planet. The roots of Russia’s social welfare system trace back to 8 June 1701. On that day, Peter the Great issued Decree No. 1856, establishing rules for caring for the sick and elderly. This marked the start of state-run support for vulnerable groups.

Under Catherine the Great, public welfare expanded further. Schools, hospitals, almshouses, and orphanages were created to serve the population. Russia later began observing Social Worker’s Day in 1994 to honour those dedicated to these causes.

World Ocean Day in Russia focuses on the planet’s vast water bodies. Oceans cover three-quarters of the Earth and hold 97% of its water. They produce most of the oxygen we breathe and shape climate and weather. Five oceans—the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic, and Southern—are recognised by scientists. Celebrations include conferences, expeditions, exhibitions, tours, and volunteer clean-up efforts. Social Worker’s Day and World Ocean Day reflect Russia’s efforts to support its people and protect the environment. Both observances involve practical actions and public engagement. They also underscore the historical and ongoing significance of these issues.
