Kazakhstan's Botai: The Lost World Brings Ancient Horse Culture to Life

Filming has begun in Petropavl for Botai: The Lost World, the first full-length feature film about the ancient Botai culture. The project is already being called one of the most important cultural events in northern Kazakhstan in years. The Botai culture thrived over 5,000 years ago in what is now modern-day Kazakhstan. Archaeologist Viktor Zaibert first uncovered its remains in 1980 in the Aiyrtau District. This society is believed to be among the earliest in the world to domesticate horses.

The taming of the horse transformed life across Eurasia. It changed how people travelled, farmed, and built civilisations. The filmmakers want to bring this history to life through a vivid historical drama.

The creators hope the film will give audiences a new view of the Great Steppe’s ancient past. They also aim to highlight the region’s rich cultural heritage.
