Kazakhstan and UAE simplify driver's licence recognition for citizens

Kazakhstan and the UAE have signed a memorandum to simplify driver’s licence recognition for their citizens. The agreement aims to make licence exchange easier between the two countries. It follows talks between senior officials during a recent visit. On 25 June 2023, Kazakhstan’s Interior Minister Yerzhan Sadenov met Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. Their discussions covered cooperation in tackling crime, including organised transnational crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking, and fugitive apprehension. They also explored sharing operational intelligence, adopting modern technologies, and training personnel.

During the visit, both sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on mutual recognition and exchange of driver’s licences. The document allows national permits to be accepted in both countries and simplifies the exchange process. Around 400,000 Kazakh citizens visit the UAE each year, while roughly 14,000 live there permanently.

The memorandum will take effect once both nations complete their domestic approval procedures. The agreement will reduce administrative hurdles for drivers from both countries. It also strengthens broader cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UAE in law enforcement and public services. The simplified process is expected to benefit travellers and residents alike.
