Pittsburgh's Citizen Science Lab opens doors to young STEM dreamers

The Citizen Science Lab in Pittsburgh’s Hill District officially opened on Friday. Dr. Andre Samuel, its founder, marked the occasion by cutting the ceremonial ribbon. The project, a long-held dream for him, aims to expand STEM education for local children. Planning for the lab began well before its groundbreaking a year ago. Funding came from grants and community fundraising efforts. Every room, lab, and classroom in the facility is named after historic Black pioneers in science and technology.

The opening ceremony drew young attendees, including four-year-old Amari Abney and his six-year-old brother Aerius. Amari hopes to become a spacecraft pilot one day. Aerius, meanwhile, wants to be a scientist to help keep his brother safe in space.

The lab will offer classes and summer science camps for children in the Hill District. Its mission is to provide hands-on learning and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. The Citizen Science Lab is now ready to serve the community. Its programmes will begin soon, offering new opportunities for young learners. The facility stands as a tribute to both past and future innovators.
