Urban explorers uncover haunting relics at abandoned Cold War airbase

A team of urban explorers was caught trespassing at an abandoned Cold War-era Air Force base in Blytheville, Arkansas. The group had entered Eaker Air Force Base, which closed in 1992 and has stood empty since. Their exploration briefly led to a confrontation with a K-9 police unit. The team first entered the derelict Eaker Air Force Base. Inside the old hospital, they found rusted surgical lights, collapsed ceilings, and water-damaged nursery rooms. Sterilisers and other medical equipment remained, left to decay for decades.

They also visited the abandoned YMCA on the site. Unlike other structures, this building was still in relatively good condition. Their documentation inadvertently highlighted the lingering effects of the Cold War on the small town.

Local residents told them how the base’s closure had devastated Blytheville. The population halved after the shutdown, leaving lasting scars on the community. The city has since pushed for federal funding to clean up unsafe buildings and repurpose parts of the property. The explorers’ visit ended with a scare when they were detained by police. Their findings shed light on the base’s decay and the town’s ongoing struggles. Blytheville continues to seek support for the site’s cleanup and redevelopment.
