Omsk unveils new plaque honoring wartime military enlistment office

A new commemorative plaque has been unveiled at 20 Tarskaya Street in Omsk. It replaces an earlier one crafted by Igor Konovalov in 1988. The building once served as the Stalin District military enlistment office during the Great Patriotic War. The original plaque was made by Konovalov, who managed a restoration workshop for Remfasad in the building during the late 1980s. He also shared a personal connection: his grandfather, Yefrem Ivanovich, was drafted from this very location.

The building itself once had a distinctive design, featuring an extra entryway vestibule, a side entrance, a small turret with a balcony, and other decorative details. VOOPIiK’s Omsk branch highlighted these architectural elements as part of its original appearance.

The updated plaque was created through a collaboration between VOOPIiK and local historian Sergei Naumov. Naumov explained that the new text better reflects the building’s significance for Omsk residents today. The plaque now stands as a reminder of the building’s historical role. It honours its past as a military enlistment office and preserves its connection to local wartime history. The updated design ensures its relevance for current and future generations.
