How Dr. M. S. Swaminathan reshaped India's food security and farming future

Dr. M. S. Swaminathan played a pivotal role in India’s Green Revolution, which transformed the country’s food production. His work helped prevent widespread famine by introducing high-yielding crop varieties and modern farming techniques. He later became a leading voice for sustainable agriculture and biodiversity conservation. The Green Revolution took place between the 1960s and 1970s. It relied on high-yielding wheat and rice varieties, expanded irrigation, and the use of modern fertilisers and pesticides. Dr. Swaminathan collaborated with international scientists to develop these crops, significantly boosting India’s agricultural output.

Despite its success, the Green Revolution raised concerns about long-term sustainability. Heavy chemical inputs and intensive land use prompted Dr. Swaminathan to advocate for greener practices. He promoted crop rotation, organic farming, and integrated pest management to protect the environment.

He also championed the conservation of indigenous crop varieties and genetic resources. His efforts extended to policy, where he shaped climate-smart agricultural strategies for resilience against climate change and pests. In 1988, he founded the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation to support rural communities through e-agriculture and women’s empowerment. Dr. Swaminathan’s contributions span from revolutionising food production to promoting sustainable farming. His foundation continues to empower rural areas with technology and gender-inclusive approaches. His legacy includes both innovation and a commitment to preserving agricultural biodiversity for future generations.
