Researchers reveal how rural life in the Rhön has transformed over time

Researchers from the Universities of Göttingen and Kassel have studied changes in rural life across the Rhön region. Dr. Gonzalo Cortés-Capano and Roman Hinz led the project, which took place last autumn. They spoke with farmers, conservationists, tourism workers, and local residents to gather insights. The team carried out many discussions with people living and working in the area. Their goal was to understand how daily life in the Rhön has evolved over time.

In late June and early July 2026, the researchers will share their initial findings. Three public events are planned in Oberelsbach, Dermbach, and Hilders. Each session starts at 6:00 PM, with dates set for June 29, June 30, and July 1. Attendees can pick the event most convenient for them, no matter where they live in the region. The events will offer a chance to discuss the researchers’ early observations. Local perspectives will help shape the final analysis. The team aims to present a clearer picture of rural transformation in the Rhön.
