Bitcoin Network Activity Nears All-Time Highs as Small Transactions Dominate

Bitcoin network activity has surged to near record levels. The increase marks the first time since 2024 that CryptoQuant's Bitcoin Network Activity Index has entered positive territory. Small transactions and data-heavy usage are driving the change. The trend began with the rise of Bitcoin Ordinals in 2023. This led to a sharp increase in network usage, fees, and storage demands. By May of that year, mining revenue hit $916.6 million.

Now, transactions worth less than 0.01 bitcoin make up around 80% of daily activity. At the same time, use of the OP_RETURN feature is near record highs. The mempool has grown to around 128,000 transactions, the largest since February 2025.

The shift shows a growing demand to use Bitcoin as a data layer, not just for payments. This is increasing competition for block space, which may push up fees for regular financial transfers. The network is seeing more data-heavy transactions than ever. This could lead to higher costs for traditional transfers. The change reflects a broader evolution in how Bitcoin is being used.
