ArmA: Cold War Assault turns 25 with a remaster and open-source surprise

Operation Flashpoint, now known as ArmA: Cold War Assault, turned 25 this year. The game was a groundbreaking military simulator when it launched in June 2001. It introduced an open-world concept that let players command squads, drive tanks, and fly helicopters. The original release set new standards for realism and freedom in military games. Its open-world design allowed players to approach missions in multiple ways. Over time, it became a cult classic among fans of tactical shooters.

To mark its anniversary, Bohemia Interactive has announced a remastered edition of ArmA: Cold War Assault. The updated version will include improved features and modernised gameplay. A demo of the remaster is already available, also serving as an asset pack for modders.

The studio has also released the full engine source code for the game on GitHub. The code has been upgraded to C++20 and now supports Windows x64 and Linux x64. Modders and programmers can freely use it, but any forks must be clearly labelled as separate from the ArmA and Operation Flashpoint brands.

Looking ahead, the series continues to evolve. ArmA 4 is currently in development and scheduled for release in 2027. The remastered edition and open-source release give fans new ways to experience the classic game. Developers can now build on its foundation with modern tools. The franchise remains active, with ArmA 4 set to arrive in the coming years.
