Bremen and Lower Saxony shatter June heat records in 2023

June 2023 brought unusually warm weather to Bremen and Lower Saxony. Average temperatures in both regions climbed to 18.7°C, over three degrees above the long-term norm. The month also saw record-breaking heat in some areas. Bremen recorded its highest June temperature at 37.3°C, breaking the previous record. Lower Saxony then made history on 28 June when temperatures passed 40°C for the first time ever.

Rainfall was also above average. Bremen received about 83 litres per square metre, roughly 14% more than usual. Lower Saxony saw around 82 litres, a 7% rise over its long-term average. Most of this rain fell in the first half of the month.

Sunshine was plentiful as well. Bremen enjoyed approximately 235 hours of sunlight, while Lower Saxony had about 239 hours. The month ended with both regions experiencing warmer, wetter, and sunnier conditions than typical. These extremes set new benchmarks for temperature and rainfall in the area. The data reflects a notable departure from usual June patterns.
