Yossi Klein Halevi's bold plea for Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation through dialogue

Yossi Klein Halevi is a well-known writer and commentator on the Israel-Palestine conflict. His 2018 book, Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, is widely regarded as a key work in the field. It presents his arguments for mutual recognition as a path to peace. Born in 1953 in Brooklyn to Hungarian Jewish immigrants, Halevi became active in Jewish causes at a young age. As a teenager, he advocated for Soviet Jews and joined the Jewish Defense League. In 1982, he moved to Israel, where he has since lived and worked.

His first major book, Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist (1995), explores his time as a follower of the controversial rabbi Meir Kahane. Later works include At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden (2001), which documents his spiritual explorations across Christian and Islamic traditions in Israel. Like Dreamers (2013) tells the story of the Israeli paratroopers who captured Jerusalem’s Old City during the 1967 Six-Day War.

In Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor, Halevi argues that lasting peace depends on acknowledging the other side’s pain and aspirations. The book ends with responses from Palestinians worldwide, invited by Halevi to share their own perspectives. Halevi remains a prominent voice in Israel and the US, though his influence in German discussions is less pronounced. His writings continue to shape conversations about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the possibilities for reconciliation.
