Altadena's New Bill Aims to Halt Overdevelopment After Eaton Fire

A proposed law aims to shield Altadena from rapid overdevelopment after the Eaton Fire. The bill, called the Keep Altadena Land in Altadena Hands Act, is set for a vote in the California State Legislature this week. It seeks to pause certain housing density rules in the area for five years. The Eaton Fire destroyed nearly two-thirds of Altadena’s homes. This has left many families waiting for insurance payouts and rebuilding plans. Meanwhile, developers can move quickly to buy land and start new projects.

SB 1090 would temporarily block some housing density laws for development applications submitted between January 2025 and January 2030. The bill’s supporters argue it will prevent outside investors from prioritising profits over the community’s needs. Accessory Dwelling Units remain permitted under Altadena’s emergency rebuild rules.

The legislation faces key hearings and votes in the assembly committee on July 1. Local advocates are pushing for its approval to protect the area’s future. If passed, the bill will limit developer influence during Altadena’s recovery period. It would give residents more time to rebuild without pressure from rapid development.
