Doctors Face Crisis as Burnout and Sleep Deprivation Hit 98% in Some Hospitals
A recent survey has revealed alarming levels of burnout and sleep deprivation among doctors in clinical departments. Rates of these issues have reached as high as 97% to 98% in some areas. The findings highlight severe mental exhaustion caused by demanding work conditions. Long shifts, pressure from senior staff, and relentless workloads are taking a heavy toll on doctors. Over 20% of them work more than 100 hours each week, while nearly half exceed 80 hours. In Madhya Pradesh, more than 87% of resident doctors report burnout and insufficient sleep.
The situation is worsening due to staff shortages, low stipends, and a lack of mental health support. Over 60% of doctors work continuous shifts longer than 36 hours, and 63.7% do not get proper rest afterwards. These conditions are affecting both medical education and patient safety.
The pressure has become unbearable for many. Half of the doctors surveyed have considered leaving their residency programmes. Worryingly, around 17% have even had thoughts of self-harm because of their workload. The data shows extreme stress levels among doctors, driven by excessive hours and poor working conditions. Many face sleep deprivation, burnout, and mental health struggles. These issues threaten both their well-being and the quality of healthcare they provide.
