Astana's Massive Mosquito Control Operation Targets 90% Reduction

Astana has launched a large-scale mosquito control campaign across the city. The operation began on 16 June and targets central districts first. Over 26,000 hectares have already been treated since the start of the season. The campaign runs in six phases, aiming to cut mosquito numbers by up to 90%. Work happens at night, between 9:00 PM and 4:00 AM, for 20 days each month. Teams operate around the clock in two shifts.

More than 150 trained pest control specialists are taking part. They use mechanical rotary sprayers, specialised vehicles, drones, and even a boat to apply treatments. Residents have been urged to stay away from treated zones and keep windows shut during spraying.

The goal is not to wipe out mosquitoes completely, as they play a role in the ecosystem. The operation will continue through all six planned phases. Authorities expect the efforts to significantly lower mosquito populations in the capital. Residents are reminded to follow safety advice during treatment periods.
