Norway restricts AI in schools to protect young learners' core skills

Norway is set to introduce new guidelines for the use of AI in schools. The proposals will cover most children aged 6 to 13 from the upcoming academic year. The focus remains on core skills like reading, writing, and mathematics. The government’s plan prioritises traditional learning for younger students. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has warned that early use of AI could cause children to miss key educational stages. For this reason, pupils aged 6 to 13 will not use large-language model tools in class.

Older students will have more flexibility. Those aged 14 to 16 in lower secondary school may use AI tools, but only under strict teacher supervision. Students aged 17 to 19 in upper secondary school will receive training to use AI responsibly, preparing them for future jobs. The new rules aim to balance technology with foundational learning. Younger pupils will focus on core subjects without AI assistance. Older students will gradually learn to use AI in a controlled and practical way.
