AI Shopping Agents Could Reshape Consumer Habits by 2026
A new report by Checkout.com explores how AI shopping agents could change consumer habits. Titled Agentic Commerce 2026: The State of Consumer Demand and Merchant Readiness, it reveals mixed feelings about delegating purchases to AI. Some shoppers are already open to the idea, while others remain cautious. Consumers show the most willingness to let AI handle grocery shopping, with 41% prepared to delegate this task. Household supplies follow at 31%. Yet, 24% of people say they will never use AI agents for purchases at all.
Trust remains a hurdle. 27% of consumers do not trust any organisation to manage an AI shopping agent on their behalf. To feel secure, they demand clear controls: spending caps (30%), instant revocation (29%), and easy cancellation (28%).
The shift could alter brand loyalty. Over half (57%) of consumers would switch brands if an AI agent found better value. A third (33%) expect at least 10% of their spending to be AI-driven within a year. On average, they would allow an agent to spend £177 per transaction without extra approval.
Merchants are also bracing for change. Currently, only 3% of transactions involve AI agents. However, 89% of merchants are actively preparing for this trend. Nearly three quarters (72%) believe consumers will adopt agent-led shopping faster than businesses are ready for. The report highlights a growing interest in AI-driven shopping, but trust and control remain key concerns. Merchants are investing in preparation, though adoption is still low. The findings suggest a potential shift in how people shop and which brands they choose.
