Claudia Gorf named Berlin's new Chief Public Prosecutor in December

Claudia Gorf will take over as Berlin’s Chief Public Prosecutor on 1 December 2023. She replaces Margarete Koppers, the first woman to hold the position. The appointment received approval from Berlin’s red-black coalition government. Margarete Koppers will step down after turning 65. She has led the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor, which employs 135 people, including 33 senior prosecutors.

Claudia Gorf brings extensive experience to the role. Since 2021, she has worked as a senior federal prosecutor at the Federal Court of Justice. Her work has focused on Islamist terrorism and internal security threats. She also contributed to the investigation of the 2016 Breitscheidplatz Christmas market terrorist attack. Gorf’s expertise in combating terrorism and national security matters will shape her leadership. She will begin her new position at the start of December. The office will continue its operations with her at the helm.
