Microsoft now says 8GB RAM is enough for basic Windows laptops

Microsoft has updated its guidance on RAM requirements for Windows laptops. The change follows ongoing debates about hardware needs, especially after Apple launched a budget MacBook with 8GB of RAM. The discussion over RAM requirements grew louder after Apple released the $599 MacBook Neo with 8GB of RAM. Microsoft had previously stated that 16GB was the minimum for an optimal Windows 11 experience. It even commissioned a report comparing the MacBook Neo to Windows 11 laptops with 16GB of RAM.

In early February 2026, a Microsoft blog post suggested 32GB as ideal for serious gamers. This post was later removed. Now, the company recommends 8GB for everyday tasks like browsing and productivity apps. It claims this amount is sufficient for a smooth and responsive user experience under normal usage.

Microsoft also promises extra headroom for multitasking and advanced AI features with 16GB or more of RAM. Despite this, it has released its own 8GB RAM laptop, priced at $1,299. Industry observers suggest the global RAM shortage may have influenced this shift in stance. Microsoft now officially supports 8GB as adequate for basic use on Windows laptops. The update reflects changing market conditions and product strategies. Users seeking advanced features or gaming may still need more memory.
