UK and Romania strengthen nuclear energy ties with landmark agreement

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) and Romatom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their collaboration. The agreement was formally signed at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris on 4 November 2021. It aims to boost ties between the UK and Romanian nuclear sectors. Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the NIA, and Corina Truica, President of the Board of Directors at Romatom, put their signatures to the document. Greatrex called the deal a significant move towards a cleaner and more secure energy future for both nations. Truica added that it creates a foundation for practical teamwork in the nuclear field.

The MoU covers several key areas of cooperation. These include large-scale nuclear projects, Small Modular Reactor (SMR) development, fusion research, decommissioning, and medical radioisotope production. It also encourages partnerships among industry firms, utilities, universities, and other relevant groups in both countries.

Beyond domestic efforts, the agreement seeks to explore joint opportunities in international markets. It also supports the inclusion of nuclear technologies in UK-Romania discussions and multilateral forums. The signing of the MoU marks a formal commitment to stronger nuclear sector collaboration. It opens pathways for shared projects and knowledge exchange between the UK and Romania. The focus remains on advancing energy security and innovation through joint initiatives.
