Deadly hit-and-run leaves bicyclist and dogs dead in San Joaquin County
A fatal hit-and-run crash occurred early Saturday on Eight Mile Road near Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park in San Joaquin County. The incident took place east of Interstate 5 and involved a bicyclist, two dogs, and an unknown vehicle that fled the scene. The crash was reported at approximately 10:18 a.m. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at 10:27 a.m. Investigators believe the victim had already been dead for between four and 12 hours before officers arrived.
The victim was riding a bicycle westbound on Eight Mile Road while pulling a shopping cart used as a trailer. Two dogs accompanied them. An unknown vehicle, travelling westbound, struck the bicyclist and the dogs before leaving the area.
Authorities describe the suspect vehicle as either a silver or light grey SUV or a Ford pickup truck. It likely has significant damage to the right front. The vehicle may have last been seen near Spanos Park West, close to Scott's Creek Drive. The victim’s identity remains unreleased at this time. Police continue to search for the suspect vehicle and driver. Anyone with information is urged to come forward to assist the investigation.
