New UK Coalition Aims to Revolutionize Financial Inclusion for Vulnerable Spenders
The Centre for Finance, Innovation and Technology (CFIT) has launched its fifth national Coalition. This initiative aims to create safer and more inclusive payment solutions for people who need support with everyday spending. It builds on the success of Project Nemo, a movement recognised for driving disability inclusion in financial services. The Financial Inclusion Coalition will bring together stakeholders from across the sector. Their goal is to develop practical solutions for inclusive and scalable implementation. The initial focus is on a Supported Payments framework, enabling vulnerable customers to make payments with trusted third-party guidance and safeguards.
The Coalition’s first phase is funded by HM Treasury. This reflects the growing momentum behind the UK Government’s Financial Inclusion Strategy, which previously acknowledged Project Nemo’s work in identifying barriers to financial support. Project Nemo itself began as a grassroots initiative and has since become one of the industry’s most influential collaborative movements, winning the Money20/20 Diamond Grand Prix in 2025.
CFIT will host a workshop on 18 June 2026 to gather input for the Coalition’s delivery roadmap. Formal activities are set to begin this summer. The Supported Payments model could reshape financial support across the UK, helping more people manage their money safely and independently. The Coalition represents the next priority in CFIT’s work, following earlier initiatives on Open Finance, Digital Company ID, SME Access to Finance, and Open Property. It seeks to turn innovation policy into practical, cross-sector delivery. The new framework aims to provide tangible support for those managing financial challenges.
