Nizhny Novgorod Launches New Ministry to Shield Critical Infrastructure

The Nizhny Novgorod region has set up a new Ministry for Critical Infrastructure Protection. This move comes as part of a wider effort to restructure the area’s security framework. The ministry will focus on defending key sites in sectors like energy, transport, and communications. Konstantin Bochkarev, a former Russian Armed Forces officer, will lead the new ministry. Vladimir Tuzhilin, the region’s deputy prime minister, has been appointed to oversee its operations. The ministry’s duties include protecting vital facilities and coordinating responses to drone threats.

It will work closely with military leaders, law enforcement, local authorities, and infrastructure owners. Plans are also in place to form a mobilization reserve and deploy both active and passive defence systems at critical locations. Meanwhile, Major industrial enterprises in the region have already begun reinforcing their own security measures.

Volunteers from the 'BARS-NN' unit are currently undergoing training. Their role will involve operating man-portable air defence systems to enhance regional protection. The new ministry will take charge of safeguarding essential infrastructure against potential attacks. It will also organise collaborative efforts between various security and civilian bodies. These steps aim to strengthen the region’s ability to respond to emerging threats.
