Scientists first discovered the Carcharodontosaurus in the 1920s, with a well-preserved fossil uncovered in the 1930s. This giant predator was one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs and roamed North Africa long before the Tyrannosaurus rex. The Carcharodontosaurus lived during the Early to Mid-Cretaceous period, millions of years before the Tyrannosaurus rex. It could reach lengths of up to 12 metres and weigh as much as six tons. Unlike its later counterpart, it had three fingers on its arms rather than two.
Its serrated, blade-like teeth were built for slicing through flesh, not crushing bones. Paleontologists believe it likely hunted large herbivores such as sauropods, though its exact behaviour remains uncertain. By the middle Cretaceous, it had disappeared, replaced by other apex predators like tyrannosaurids and abelisaurids.
Researchers continue to study its fossils to learn more about this formidable creature. The cause of its extinction is still unknown. The Carcharodontosaurus remains one of the most impressive predators of its time. Its size, unique features, and role in the ecosystem provide valuable insights into prehistoric life. Scientists hope further discoveries will reveal more about its habits and eventual demise.
