Scientists have discovered how space travel affects human cells at a fundamental level. The findings, published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, reveal that microgravity accelerates aging in stem cells. This research was led by a team from the University of California, San Diego. The study involved blood stem cells exposed to space conditions across four SpaceX missions. Small bioreactors carried the cells into orbit for observation. In space, the cells aged faster than on Earth, with telomeres shortening and regenerative capacity declining.

Repetitive DNA elements, often called the 'dark genome,' became active in these conditions. The cells also expended energy more rapidly and struggled to return to a resting state. Inflammatory signals increased, while mitochondrial function changed, both contributing to the aging process.

Some damage, however, proved reversible. When aged cells were cultured with young, healthy ones, certain effects of space exposure were undone. The research highlights the biological toll of space travel on human cells. It shows that microgravity triggers rapid aging through multiple pathways. These findings could shape future strategies for protecting astronauts on long missions.
