Murang'a's population boom reshapes Kenya's urban migration trends

Murang'a County is experiencing rapid population growth. The influx is driven by improved security, educational institutions, and a favourable business climate. Many residents are now choosing the area over pricier urban centres like Nairobi. The town currently has over 50,000 people. Students from local institutions have filled most rental houses, particularly in Maragi, where Kiharu Technical College’s 3,623 students strain existing accommodation—only 867 have hostel spaces.

County Commissioner Hassan Bulle links the rising numbers to better security and the presence of schools. Municipality Manager Bernard Mugo notes that once-rural areas are expanding quickly due to urban demand. Businesses are thriving, with many buying land to set up shops and homes.

High living costs in Nairobi have also pushed more people to relocate. Property developers see potential, drawn by shifting land use and growing activity in commercial zones. The county’s population continues to rise as new residents arrive for education, business, and affordability. Local authorities expect further development as demand for housing and services increases.
