VR Study Reveals How Burglars Pick Their Next Targets

A new study has explored how burglars choose their targets by using virtual reality. Researchers from universities in the US and Europe examined the decisions of experienced offenders in a controlled environment. The findings have been published in the journal Criminology. The study involved 160 incarcerated burglars from Pennsylvania. They navigated a virtual residential neighbourhood, assessing which homes they would target. Their choices revealed clear patterns in how they perceived risk and reward.

Thick shrubbery in front of a house made it appear less risky to the participants. They believed it reduced the chance of being seen or caught. A discarded TV box next to a trash can also signalled potential valuables inside, increasing the likelihood of a break-in.

Experienced burglars were particularly drawn to homes displaying Second Amendment signs. While these signs suggested a higher risk of encountering armed resistance, they also implied the presence of valuable items. This contradiction led to a complex assessment of danger versus potential payoff.

The researchers noted that criminal experience heavily influenced perception. Seasoned offenders were more willing to commit burglaries and evaluated risks differently than less experienced ones. The study highlights the need for tailored prevention strategies. Different types of offenders may respond to deterrents in varying ways. Virtual reality has proven useful for testing these strategies before real-world implementation.
