The US Space Force has awarded multiple contracts for Space-Based Interceptor prototypes. These deals were made through competitive Other Transaction Agreements. They form a key part of the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative from the Trump administration. The boost-phase SBI effort includes two separate contests. One focuses on endo-atmospheric intercept, while the other targets exoatmospheric intercept. Each contest is valued at a few hundred million dollars.

A $120,000 prize fund is part of the awards, with three one-year options for a ground demonstration. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Apex Spacecraft Manufacturer had all pledged to bid on the project.

However, the Pentagon has restricted public discussion of the initiative, citing operational security. The names of the winning contractors remain undisclosed under enhanced security measures. Tom Karako, director of CSIS' Missile Defense Project, highlighted both the advantages and challenges of shifting development responsibility to industry.

Congress has allocated $25 billion over the next decade for SBIs. No production contract decisions will be made until after 2028. Contracts under $9 million, including these Other Transaction Awards, are not publicly listed on USA.gov. The Space Force’s contracts mark a significant step in developing space-based missile defence. The initiative remains shrouded in secrecy, with key details withheld from the public. Funding and timelines are set, but major production decisions will wait until after 2028.
