Rural Revival: Wartburgkreis Unites to Repurpose Vacant Village Buildings

The second Regional Conference on the Future of Rural Areas took place on Saturday, 20 June, at the Wünschensuhl Village Community Center. Organised by the Office for District Planning and Regional Development at the Wartburgkreis District Administration, it aimed to boost cooperation among local governments, initiatives, associations, and citizens in the district. Around 40 participants attended, including mayors, deputy mayors, and local development activists. The event highlighted practical examples and new support programmes for repurposing vacant buildings in rural areas. Several projects from across Wartburgkreis were presented, such as the Wünschensuhl and Uebelroda village community centres.

Robert Anton from LeerGut-Agenten e.V. introduced a planned cooperation project in the district. This initiative, funded by the Sparkassenstiftung Wartburg-Region, will support 12 local groups working to revitalise empty properties. Wartburgkreis District and the LandCampus Foundation are serving as network partners for the scheme.

After the discussions, attendees joined a guided tour of Wünschensuhl. The walk provided firsthand insights into the village’s ongoing development efforts. The conference underscored the importance of resident dedication to the future of Wartburgkreis’s villages. Many local initiatives are actively seeking new collaborators to help sustain and expand their work. The event reinforced the value of shared knowledge and resources in rural revitalisation.
