Dutch Islamic schools see record growth amid funding and oversight concerns

The number of pupils in Islamic primary schools across the Netherlands has risen sharply in recent years. At the start of 2025, over 20,000 children were enrolled in these institutions, with further expansion on the horizon. Between 2009 and 2019, enrolment in Islamic primary schools surged by 60%. In the following five years, numbers climbed by an additional 23%. This growth has been partly driven by reforms that made it easier to open new schools.

Currently, public funding for Islamic primary schools reaches nearly €145 million annually. Nine more are set to open in 2026, bringing the national total to over 100. Islamic secondary schools are also expanding rapidly.

Alongside this, evening and weekend Islamic schools have increased significantly. Many of these operate with little oversight from education inspectors. Dutch intelligence services have raised concerns about potential foreign influence through funding for these institutions. Critics warn that public money could indirectly support ideas such as gradual Islamisation or the adoption of Sharia law. The rapid growth of Islamic schools reflects both demand and policy changes. With more schools planned, the sector is expected to keep expanding. Authorities continue to monitor the situation amid concerns over funding and oversight.
