Illinois Home Insurance Costs Surge 14% in 2025 Amid Climate Risks
Home insurance costs in Illinois have risen sharply in recent years. The state now ranks fourth in the US for premium increases in 2025, with a 14.1% jump. Extreme weather linked to climate change is a key factor behind the rising prices. Since 2020, Illinois home insurance rates have climbed by 68%, the seventh-largest increase nationwide. The average annual premium now stands at $2,731, which is 14% above the US average. This places Illinois at 17th for average premiums but 7th for the steepest rise since 2020.
Recent severe thunderstorms in Chicago’s Beverly neighbourhood highlighted the impact of extreme weather. Over 75 tree emergencies and nearly 2,000 power outages were reported. Some residents waited more than a week for insurance assistance after the damage. Illinois homeowners now face higher costs and slower responses from insurers. The state’s premiums remain above the national average, with further increases expected. Faster rate rises compared to the rest of the country add to the financial strain on households.
