Berlin prisons adapt operations to combat extreme summer heat

Berlin’s prisons are adapting their daily operations to cope with the current heatwave. Measures have been introduced to protect both inmates and staff from the high temperatures. Cells are now unlocked more often to improve cross-ventilation. Curtains are drawn to block direct sunlight from entering rooms. Data loggers have also been installed to track indoor temperatures in the facilities.

Inmates can buy fans through the prison commissary system. They are also permitted to shower more frequently to stay cool. Drinking water and tea are available for everyone during the summer months, and menus have been adjusted to suit the warmer conditions.

For staff working outdoors, protective gear has been provided. Recreation time for inmates may be moved to the cooler morning and evening hours to reduce heat exposure. These changes aim to ensure the safety and comfort of both inmates and staff during the heatwave. The adjustments cover ventilation, hydration, and scheduling to mitigate the effects of the high temperatures.
