North Rhine-Westphalia schools can now dismiss students early during heatwaves

Schools in North Rhine-Westphalia may now dismiss students early during extreme heat. The Ministry of Education has issued new guidelines to help schools manage high temperatures. These rules outline when and how early dismissal can be applied across different age groups. Classroom temperature is the main factor in deciding early dismissal. If the temperature rises above 27°C, schools can consider sending students home. However, no early dismissal will occur if the temperature stays below 25°C.

The decision rests with each school’s administration, based on local conditions and their own organisational plans. Primary school pupils and those in grades 5 and 6 can only leave early if parents arrange supervision or safe travel. Younger students must not be left unsupervised.

For upper secondary students in grades 11 to 13, early dismissal due to heat will not apply. Instead, individual students may be excused from class if they face health risks from the high temperatures. The Ministry also advises schools to avoid scheduling tests or exams on extremely hot days. The new guidelines provide a clear framework for managing heat in schools. Early dismissal will depend on classroom temperatures and parental coordination for younger students. Schools must ensure safety and supervision remain a priority during extreme heat.
