Drea Hineman, an undergraduate student at the University of Wyoming, has earned regional recognition for her space-farming research. Her work, supported by NASA, focuses on sustainable food production in reduced-gravity environments. The project was developed under the guidance of plant sciences Assistant Professor JJ Chen. Hineman, a senior from Gillette, majors in plant production and protection at UW. She holds the title of Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium Research Fellow. Among 29 applicants, her project ranked first for the 2025 fellowship.
Her research demonstrates that significant space-related studies can begin in a Wyoming college greenhouse. Recently, she presented her findings at the Interplanetary Life symposium in Boise.
