Airbus Unveils Space RAN to Revolutionize Global 5G via Satellite

Airbus UpNext has launched Space RAN, a new project aimed at developing 5G mobile networks via satellite. The initiative seeks to create standardised, globally available connections using 5G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).

The project is part of the Air!5G initiative, which integrates NTN technologies into mobile communications for worldwide use. Space RAN will explore direct user-to-user communication through satellite networks, reducing reliance on ground infrastructure.

Airbus leads the consortium, working alongside seven key partners: Aalyria, AccelerComm, CesiumAstro, Deutsche Telekom, Eutelsat, ITRI, and Keysight. Together, they aim to achieve universal, interoperable connections for commercial, government, and military applications.

One of the project's key innovations is the use of software-defined satellites. These satellites process 5G signals directly in orbit, cutting latency and boosting data speeds. Airbus expects to deliver the first results by 2028, with support from France 2030 funding.

Space RAN represents a step toward seamless global 5G coverage via satellite. The technology could enable faster, more reliable connections across industries. Initial findings are anticipated within the next four years.
