A new study has uncovered a striking pattern in shark biology: despite their vast differences in size and shape, all sharks follow the same geometric rule. Researchers analysed 54 species, from tiny sharks that fit in a hand to giants longer than a city bus. The findings reveal a consistent relationship between surface area and volume across every species examined. The research, led by Joel Harrison Gayford, a PhD candidate at James Cook University, used detailed CT scans and photogrammetry to build precise 3D models of each shark. These models confirmed that every species adheres closely to the 2/3 scaling law, a geometric principle predicting that as an organism grows, its surface area increases more slowly than its volume.

The rule applies even to sharks with wildly different lifestyles—whether fast swimmers, deep divers, or bottom-dwellers. Deviations from the law were minimal, usually just a few percent. This suggests that breaking from the 2/3 ratio would come with high energetic costs, making it impractical for sharks to evolve outside these constraints. Beyond sharks, the study hints at broader implications. The same geometric rules may govern other animals, offering new ways to explore evolutionary limits. The findings could also shape conservation strategies and inspire designs in bio-engineering, where efficiency in form and function is key.

The discovery confirms that sharks, despite their diversity, share a fundamental biological blueprint.
