Andy Green targets three hydrogen speed records at Bonneville in 2023

Andy Green, the first person to break the sound barrier on land, will attempt three new world records in August 2023. This time, he’ll be behind the wheel of a hydrogen-powered JCB vehicle at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. The FIA has confirmed it will oversee the record attempts, marking a key moment for sustainable speed technology. Green made history in 1997 by driving ThrustSSC faster than sound. Nearly two decades later, he set the Diesel Land Speed record at 328 mph, then raised it to 350 mph. Now, he returns to Bonneville with JCB’s Hydromax, a 32-foot hydrogen-powered machine designed to surpass his earlier achievements.

The vehicle, powered by hydrogen combustion, aims to break three records: the Hydrogen ICE mark (185 mph), the overall Hydrogen record (302 mph), and the existing JCB Hydromax benchmark (350 mph). Green has expressed confidence in the project, stating he’d be ‘amazed’ if the car didn’t smash the 350 mph target. His experience and past successes bring assurance to the team. JCB sees this attempt as a chance to prove its hydrogen technology. The Hydromax has already demonstrated reliable performance, with engineers expecting it to set a new standard for hydrogen-powered speed. If successful, the records will highlight the potential of cleaner combustion alternatives in high-performance vehicles.

The attempt will take place under FIA supervision, ensuring official recognition of any new records. Green’s return to Bonneville, now with hydrogen power, could redefine expectations for sustainable speed. The results may also influence future developments in hydrogen combustion technology for both motorsport and industry.
