AST SpaceMobile's $88B Bet: Can 243 Satellites Beat Starlink by 2029?

AST SpaceMobile is pushing ahead with plans to launch hundreds of satellites for space-based cellular broadband. The company aims to complete its network by 2028 or 2029, but financial analysts are divided on its prospects. While some us banks see strong growth ahead, others warn of overvaluation and risks in execution.

The firm's strategy relies on 243 satellites to deliver global coverage. So far, 45 Block 1 BlueBird satellites are either in orbit or under development. Another 168 Block 2 and 30 Block 2+ satellites will follow in the coming years. Success depends on flawlessly launching the next 40-60 units, a challenge that has raised concerns.

AST does not sell directly to consumers. Instead, it partners with major telecom companies through wholesale agreements. This model has fuelled investor interest, sending share prices to around $88. Yet ScotiaBank calls this a 'valuation bubble' and recommends selling, arguing the stock should trade between $45 and $55.

ScotiaBank's forecasts suggest a bright long-term outlook. It predicts free cash flow will turn positive by 2027 and hit nearly $18 billion by 2032. EBITDA is also expected to surge from $516 million in 2023 to over $15 billion by 2030. However, the bank highlights competition from Elon Musk's Starlink as a major hurdle.

Bank of America takes a more optimistic view. It recently raised AST's price target to $100, citing improvements in manufacturing and launch schedules. But analysts agree that 2026 will bring a fierce battle between AST and Starlink for dominance in full cellular services from space.

AST SpaceMobile's ambitious satellite rollout continues, with financial projections pointing to rapid growth. The company's future hinges on overcoming technical risks and competition. Analysts remain split on whether current share prices reflect real value or speculative optimism.
