Aton Resources shifts from gold exploration to production in Egypt's Eastern Desert

Aton Resources is moving from exploration to gold production in Egypt's Eastern Desert. The company's Abu Marawat concession is now preparing for commercial mining, with operations set to begin by late 2026. Investors are watching closely as new drilling data and regulatory steps shape the project's future.

The Abu Marawat site sits in a strategically convenient location. Its proximity to a 220-kV power line and a major four-lane highway simplifies logistics for mining operations. These advantages have helped accelerate plans for production.

Aton has launched an extensive drilling programme, completing 71 boreholes to assess deep mineralisation. The results will refine the resource estimate and guide the final development strategy. Meanwhile, a modular processing plant is under consideration to enable early gold extraction before full-scale production.

Environmental and social assessments, including biodiversity studies, are currently in progress. These evaluations must meet Egypt's mining regulations before operations can fully commence. The Hamama West deposit will serve as the project's core, with commercial output expected in the second half of 2026.

Egypt's government has been working to attract foreign mining investment through updated regulatory frameworks. However, no recent changes to political or regulatory support for foreign miners have been reported in the past five years.

The success of Abu Marawat hinges on integrating new geological data into the final mining plan. If all goes as scheduled, gold production will start in late 2026. The project's progress will also depend on completing environmental reviews and maintaining stable regulatory conditions.
