Aule Space, a startup focused on extending satellite lifespans, has secured $2 million in pre-seed funding. The round was led by pi Ventures, with backing from angel investors and India's space agency, IN-SPACe. The company plans to use the funds to develop its first demonstration satellite, set for launch next year.

The Bengaluru-based startup specialises in jetpack satellites designed to dock with ageing geostationary (GEO) communication satellites. By refuelling or repositioning them, Aule Space aims to extend their operational life by up to six years. This approach reduces the need for costly replacements and helps manage space debris.

Aule Space will use the $2 million to expand its engineering team and build ground-based testing infrastructure. The demonstration satellite, launching in 2025, will validate the docking technology in orbit. The company also plans to raise an additional $5 million to scale operations and support future missions.

Globally, a few firms are working on similar solutions. Starfish Space, for instance, is developing its Otter vehicle for autonomous docking and servicing in low Earth orbit. The US-based company has secured a Space Force contract, with missions planned for 2025–2026.

With its first satellite launch approaching, Aule Space is positioning itself as a key player in satellite life extension. The funding will help refine its docking technology and expand its team. If successful, the startup could provide a cost-effective way to maintain critical GEO satellites for years beyond their original lifespan.
