Bangladesh Strengthens Satellite Tech with Thales Alenia Space Deal

Bangladesh has taken a step to boost its satellite and Earth Observation (EO) capabilities through a new partnership. On Tuesday, Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited signed an agreement with Thales Alenia Space. The deal aims to improve domestic expertise in satellite imagery and data management for key sectors like agriculture, disaster response, and national security.

Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, special assistant to the chief adviser, attended the signing alongside Italian Ambassador Antonio Alessandro. Both officials emphasised the importance of the collaboration for technological growth and capacity building.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) focuses on strengthening Bangladesh’s ability to use Earth Observation systems effectively. It includes plans for local skill development, knowledge transfer, and pilot projects that apply EO data to national priorities. The partnership also covers cyber security, institutional training, and university collaborations.

Taiyeb highlighted the country’s commitment to advanced technologies, particularly in satellite-based solutions. He noted that around 25,000 technology graduates enter Bangladesh’s workforce each year, stressing the need for structured training and opportunities. He also called for a National Satellite Image Repository to provide unified data access across all government ministries. During the event, Taiyeb thanked Italy for its ongoing support, describing it as 'a trusted friend and partner'. Ambassador Alessandro echoed this sentiment, pointing out the strategic value of the partnership in advancing earth observation and satellite technologies for both nations.

The agreement sets the stage for closer cooperation between Bangladesh and Thales Alenia Space in satellite technology. It will support training programmes, data-sharing initiatives, and pilot projects tailored to national needs. The partnership is expected to enhance Bangladesh’s capabilities in climate monitoring, disaster management, and security through improved access to satellite imagery.
