Battle of Puebla reenactment adapts route for smoother 2022 celebration

Mexico City’s annual Battle of Puebla reenactment took place smoothly this year, thanks to tight security planning. The event, recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2019, also saw a key change in its traditional route. For the first time, parade contingents avoided passing through Mexico City International Airport (AICM). The reenactment honoured the historic 1862 clash where General Ignacio Zaragoza and the Zacapoaxtla forces defeated the French army. As usual, participants dressed in period costumes to recreate the battle’s key moments. Organisers worked closely with local authorities to ensure public safety throughout the event.

This year’s parade route was adjusted to bypass the airport, a decision praised by Mayor Evelyn Parra. She called the change a significant improvement, reducing traffic disruptions for thousands of drivers. The Venustiano Carranza borough also emphasised the importance of maintaining the tradition while adapting to modern needs. Security measures were heightened, with coordinated efforts from police and event staff. The precautions paid off, as the reenactment concluded without any reported incidents.
