Black Gold in the Backyard: German Gardener Strikes Oil by Accident
After the sharp rise in fuel prices at gas stations and for heating oil, one resident of the Rhön region has taken matters into his own hands—by drilling for his own crude oil.
On his large garden plot, the enterprising local has set up a small oil rig using repurposed equipment from the former VEB Erdöl-Erdgas Grimmen, specifically a classic "horsehead" pumpjack.
He stumbled upon the oil deposit by accident during copper drilling operations carried out in recent years.
The quality of the crude is reportedly quite high, requiring only minor modifications to a heating system before it can be burned as fuel. Even his old tractor can run on the extracted oil with just a few technical adjustments. Neighbors, eager to cut costs, have already expressed interest in using the locally sourced oil in their own heating systems.
