Blind Association Explores Firefighting Through Touch and Experience
Members of the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (BSVT e.V.) in the Bad Salzungen district gathered last Wednesday in front of the Bad Salzungen Volunteer Fire Department's station.
There, they were warmly welcomed by the current equipment officer, Mr. Seltitz, and his predecessor. Around 70 volunteer firefighters—balancing their day jobs with immense dedication and passion—sacrifice their personal time for the rigorous training required to keep the department ready for action at all times.
Together, the group entered the vast vehicle and equipment bay. The two firefighters had already laid out key pieces of fire service gear for the visitors to explore.
With great interest, the guests—under expert guidance and explanation—were able to touch and examine fire hoses, distributors, nozzles, hose jets, masks, safety ropes, life-saving compressed air cylinders, and a full set of fire-resistant protective gear, including the helmet.
"None of us fully realized that firefighters head into action carrying over 30 kilograms of equipment. This revelation deepened our respect and admiration for their work immeasurably," the group reflected.
Patiently and vividly, the firefighters answered the BSVT members' questions. "We gained insight into the courage, expertise, physical fitness, and absolute teamwork that every operation demands," the organizer noted.
Saving and protecting lives remains their highest priority. Every action taken by firefighters in an emergency is the result of relentless training—training that can mean the difference between life and death.
Each participant had the chance to operate a practice fire extinguisher and, with expert assistance, attempt boarding a fire truck. They also thoroughly explored the emergency vehicle, feeling the meticulously arranged equipment inside.
"We extend our heartfelt thanks to the firefighters for this informative and deeply moving experience! Our greatest gratitude and highest respect go to their daily commitment," the group concluded.
