Blueshift’s AeroZero Tapes revolutionize thermal protection for orbiting satellites

Blueshift has developed a new thermal protection solution for satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Their AeroZero Tapes offer a major advance in passive thermal management, helping satellites endure extreme temperature shifts. The technology is already being adopted by engineers working on modern small satellites and CubeSats.

LEO satellites face rapid temperature swings, from -100°C to +120°C every 90 minutes. Traditional thermal protection often adds weight and bulk, but Blueshift’s AeroZero Tapes provide a lighter alternative for satellites. The tapes feature an open-cell structure that acts as a thermal barrier, reducing temperature differences across components of satellites.

The material delivers 19 times lower thermal conductivity (0.008 W/mK) and six times lower thermal diffusivity than standard polyimide tapes. This structured vacuum gap limits conductive heat transfer, protecting sensitive electronics and batteries of satellites. Even near heat-intensive solar arrays, the tapes maintain stability, ensuring smoother and more predictable performance for satellites.

Tim Burbey, Blueshift’s president, highlighted the tapes’ role in modern satellite design. As satellites become smaller and more compact, traditional thermal systems are less practical. AeroZero Tapes offer a lightweight solution without sacrificing protection, supporting more efficient and reliable systems for satellites.

The technology also aligns with Blueshift’s broader research into sustainable spaceflight. By improving thermal management, the tapes contribute to safer atmospheric re-entry of orbital debris of satellites.

AeroZero Tapes are now being used by engineers developing small satellites and CubeSats. The material’s superior insulation helps maintain thermal balance in harsh conditions for satellites. With this innovation, Blueshift aims to set a new benchmark for passive thermal protection in LEO missions of satellites.
