Canary Islands' New Radio Show Brings the Cosmos Closer to Earth
The Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics (IAC) has launched a new weekly radio show called Dreaming of Stars. The 30-minute programme aims to make astronomy and the work of the Canary Islands Observatories more accessible to the public. Hosted by Verónica Martín, head of the IAC's Scientific Communication and Culture Unit, it airs every Friday at 10:30 PM on Canary Radio.
Dreaming of Stars brings together science, local culture, and public engagement. Each episode features interviews with IAC researchers, covering recent discoveries, ongoing projects, and the advanced telescopes used in the Canaries. The show also highlights the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma and the Teide Observatory on Tenerife—both globally recognised for their contributions to astronomy.
Regular segments include 'Looking at the Sky', which explores visible celestial events, and 'The Cosmos in the Classroom', an educational initiative called PETeR. Other recurring sections, such as COSMOLAB, 'From the Sky to the Thesis', and 'Corners of the IAC', delve into research, training, and behind-the-scenes work at the institute.
The programme is available beyond radio broadcasts. Listeners can catch episodes as podcasts on Canary Islands Radio and Television (iVoox) or stream them directly from the IAC website. By offering multiple formats, the show reaches a wider audience, reinforcing the Canary Islands' reputation as a hub for scientific knowledge.
Dreaming of Stars strengthens the connection between cutting-edge research and the public. The programme not only showcases the IAC's work but also positions the Canary Islands as a leading destination for astronomy and scientific outreach. Episodes are now accessible across radio, podcast platforms, and the IAC's official site.
