Cebu's historic circle to get safety-focused redesign by 2026

Mayor Nestor Archival met with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry on May 5, 2026, to discuss a major upgrade for the city’s historic circle. The project focuses on improving pedestrian safety while preserving the area’s heritage and character. Current issues like cracked paths, unsafe exits, and poorly placed utilities have made the space hazardous for visitors and locals alike. The existing circle suffers from deteriorating jogging paths, uneven flooring, and mature trees at risk from neglect. Electrical transformers and other utilities are poorly positioned, creating maintenance challenges and safety hazards. The redesign aims to address these problems with wider walkways, clearer entry points, and better-organized service zones for easier access.

Local architects and business leaders are collaborating to modernise the space without losing its historical identity. The plan includes a 12-meter entry and exit corridor aligned with the Cebu Provincial Capitol axis, reducing conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles. Open sightlines will be maintained to keep the area recognizable, while new amenities like public toilets, playgrounds, and shaded seating will improve daily use. Protection measures for mature trees and expanded green spaces are also part of the proposal. The city government will continue consulting stakeholders as the design evolves, ensuring the project remains participatory and adaptable to feedback.

The long-term vision is to create a safer, more functional urban space that the community can take pride in. Wider paths, better lighting, and organised utilities will reduce risks for pedestrians. If successful, the redesign could set a standard for balancing heritage preservation with modern urban needs.
