Chaos unfolds on A27 motorway after fire, crash and wrong-way driver
A series of incidents disrupted traffic on the A27 motorway over the weekend. Early on Sunday, a wrong-way driver was spotted near Altenwalde, while a fire and a crash caused further delays. Authorities have launched investigations into each case. The first incident occurred on Saturday when a car caught fire on the A27 near Bremerhaven. The engine bay was completely destroyed, leaving the vehicle with an estimated €25,000 in damage. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
Later that day, a 51-year-old man from Hemmingen lost control of his car on a hail-covered stretch of the A27 near Schwanewede. His vehicle skidded into a guardrail, resulting in minor injuries for the driver. The car had been fitted with summer tyres at the time of the crash.
In the early hours of Sunday, at 4:50 a.m., police received reports of a red Volkswagen Golf driving the wrong way toward Bremen near the Altenwalde junction. Despite an immediate response, officers were unable to locate the vehicle. The driver, a 37-year-old man from the Emsland region, was later identified and now faces criminal proceedings.
Additionally, a 32-year-old man from Offenbach was found to have been driving without valid insurance since February. Police have urged witnesses to contact them via Cuxhaven (04721/573-0) or Geestland (04743/928-0) with any further information. The incidents have led to multiple investigations, including criminal charges for the wrong-way driver. Police continue to rely on public tips to address ongoing risks on the A27. No further proactive measures have been announced at this time.
