China Plans Twin Probes to the Solar System's Outer Edge by 2033

China is moving closer to launching two ambitious spacecraft to the outer edges of the solar system. Recently published research papers outline plans for missions targeting the head and tail of the heliosphere. These probes, set for launch in 2032 and 2033, signal a major step in the country's deep-space exploration efforts.

The proposals have gained traction as part of China's long-term space science goals, with formal approval potentially coming in 2026 under the 15th Five-Year Plan.

The twin missions will lift off aboard Long March 5 rockets, each equipped with an additional kick stage for extra propulsion. Their trajectories will first take them past Jupiter, using the planet's gravity to slingshot toward their final destinations. One probe will head toward the nose of the heliosphere, while the other will travel to the far end of the heliotail.

Scientific objectives focus on heliospheric physics, including detailed studies of the heliopause, termination shock, and the mysterious ribbon of neutral atoms discovered by NASA's IBEX mission. The spacecraft will carry 11 instruments designed to fill gaps in current heliophysics research. Wu Weiren, director of China's Deep Space Exploration Laboratory and a lead author of the mission papers, has highlighted the project's importance in recent space policy documents.

If approved, the head-direction probe is expected to reach its target around 2053. The tail-direction mission, meanwhile, will arrive at the solar system's farthest edge by approximately 2059.

The project aligns with China's broader space ambitions, as outlined in its latest white paper and long-term science roadmap. Both documents emphasise solar system boundary exploration as a priority for advanced missions.

The missions mark China's first attempt to explore the solar system's outer limits. Their success would provide new data on the heliosphere's structure and behaviour. Formal approval in 2026 could set the stage for a launch within the next decade.
